The word Ardas, meaning a request, a supplication, a prayer, a petition, or an address to a superior authority, is a fundamental aspect of Sikh tradition. It is a prayer ritual performed before or after significant tasks, daily prayers, religious services such as Paath and kirtan, and even before and after meals in Sikhism. This prayer serves as a humble plea to seek support and assistance from God for current or upcoming endeavors.

According to Sikh tradition, the Ardas is typically conducted with the devotee standing reverently with folded hands. The established format of the Ardas was prescribed by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. The conclusion of this prayer often includes invocations such as:

• Akal Purakh - 'Akal Purakh, having completed the hymn-singing, we seek your continued blessings to perpetuate your memory and remain devoted to you.'
